David Alpaugh’s first collection, Counterpoint, won the Nicholas Roerich Poetry Prize from Story Line Press in 1994 (reissued by Red Hen Press in 2021). Alpaugh has published more than four hundred poems in literary journals from Able Muse to Poetry to Zyzzyva and is one of the contemporary poets included in the Heyday Press anthology California Poetry from the Gold Rush to the Present, edited by Dana Gioia.His essays on “Po-Biz” in Poets & Writers, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and Rattle have been widely discussed by poets in print and online. Alpaugh has been a finalist for poet laureate of California and has taught creative writing and literature at the University of California, Berkeley, Extension and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. He currently writes a monthly “Favorite Poem” column for the international online arts journal Scene4. His previous books for Word Galaxy Press are Spooky Action at a Distance, a collection of double-title poems (a genre he invented), and Seeing the There There (a collection of his visual poems).
